Grimdark fantasy is fantasy with the gloves firmly off. Forget noble heroes, simple villains and kingdoms where everything works out nicely in the end. Here, magic can be dangerous, heroes are often deeply flawed, and doing the right thing can be almost as unpleasant as doing the wrong thing. Expect betrayal, political scheming, brutal battles and plenty of morally questionable decisions along the way. Yet that darker edge is exactly what makes grimdark so much fun. Beneath all the blood, cynicism and misery, there are usually some brilliantly complex characters and stories that keep you guessing right until the very end.
