Sarah Painter’s Crow Investigations series is a cracking bit of urban fantasy, following Lydia Crow as she discovers that London is hiding rather more magical secrets than she ever expected. There are ancient families, dangerous supernatural politics, mysteries to unravel and more than a few occasions when Lydia’s life threatens to fall spectacularly apart. What really makes the series work, though, is the combination of believable characters, excellent world building and a London that feels every bit as alive as the people inhabiting it. With plenty of atmosphere, mystery and steadily escalating stakes, this is a series that keeps finding new ways to surprise.
