Joe Abercrombie’s Shattered Sea trilogy takes us into a brutal, Viking-inspired world where survival depends as much on cunning as swordsmanship. Following Yarvi, Thorn and a wonderfully flawed collection of characters, the series explores revenge, loyalty, ambition and the uncomfortable compromises people make along the way. What I particularly enjoyed was watching seemingly straightforward adventures develop into something considerably more morally complicated. Abercrombie delivers his trademark sharp dialogue, dark humour and unexpected twists, albeit with a slightly lighter touch than his First Law novels. It’s a thoroughly entertaining trilogy that proves you don’t need sprawling epics to tell satisfyingly complex stories.
