Mick Herron’s Slough House series is a gloriously cynical take on the world of British espionage, following a collection of disgraced or inconvenient MI5 officers dumped into a department where careers go to die. Led, if that is the word, by the foul mouthed and surprisingly capable Jackson Lamb, the Slow Horses continually find themselves dragged into situations far beyond their supposed pay grade. Mixing sharp political satire, dark humour, genuinely gripping plots and some brilliantly flawed characters, the series manages to be both hugely entertaining and increasingly relevant to modern Britain.
